Questions people ask
Which companies ask system design interview questions?
Almost every company that hires senior software engineers runs a system design round. On this site the most reported are Amazon (62), Google (60), Meta (51), Microsoft (45), Uber (28), LinkedIn (14), across 62 companies in all, from public interview guides and candidate reports.
Do different companies ask different system design questions?
Partly. Companies lean towards problems that look like their own products, such as feeds at social networks, payments at fintechs and dispatch at delivery companies, but the patterns underneath repeat everywhere: caching, partitioning, fan-out, real-time delivery and correctness under retries. Practising the patterns transfers between companies; memorising one list does not.
How is the system design round different from company to company?
Length, shape and emphasis vary. Some rounds are product-shaped and weigh product judgement, others are infrastructure-shaped and weigh failure modes and scale, and some favour correctness over throughput. Notes on how the round runs are kept for Anthropic, Google, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, Microsoft and others, each with a mock interview run in that style.
